Greta Vardanyan Biography

Greta Vardanyan is one of the most popular and richest Alpine Skier who was born on February 20, 1986 in Armenia. Greta Vardanyan (nee Khndzrtsyan) was born on the 20th of February, 1986. At the age of two the age of her injury, she was struck by the 1988 Armenian earthquake. The result was that both of her legs were removed just above her knee. Vardanyan’s siblings and parents also passed away due to injuries suffered during the earthquake.

In 2012 she was selected to be part of a female only team, along with swimmer Maga Hovakimyan. They were selected by Armenia to participate at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, England. This was the second time she was chosen as the flag-bearer of Armenia during the Parade of Nations during the opening ceremony. Vardanyan was unable to reach the medal positions she weighed 82.2 kilograms (181 lbs) in the women’s 48-kg competition.

Vardanyan finished in second place at the opening event of the World Para Powerlifting World Cup in 2017, held in Eger, Hungary. Taking part in the 55 kg class, she lifted 85 kilograms (187 lb), only beaten by Chile’s Camila Campos with a lift of 92 kilograms (203 lb).

She started competing in weightlifting professionally in the year 2005, and she competed at her very first competition two years later during the European Open Championships in Greece she finished first in her class, and took home the silver medal. Her first Summer Paralympics came in Beijing, China, in 2008. Her name was picked to carry the flag for Armenia in the Parade of Nations in the opening ceremony. Vardanyan was not placed in the women’s 48kg weight class because she failed to lift the weight of 80 kilograms (180 lbs) on three occasions.

Greta Vardanyan (born on February 20 the 20th of February, 1987) has been an Armenian powerlifter and para-alpine skier. She has participated at four times in the national team of Armenia in the Paralympic Games, one Winter and three Summer. Vardanyan was the flag-bearer on each occasion that she participated in the Summer Games.

Vardanyan began to participate at sports around 1993, first with para-alpine skiers. Her name was discovered in 2002, and from 2002 to 2005 she participated in competitions at her home country of the United States. While still using her maiden name Vardanyan was one of two athletes representing Armenia in the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Turin, Italy. Vardanyan participated in the women’s giant slalom and finished at 3:43.29 at 11th place.

Vardanyan was once again selected to compete for Armenia at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As with the previous two games, she was chosen as her nation’s flag bearer in the Parade of Nations. She finished in fifth place in her weight class, her heaviest lift being 96 kilograms (212 lb) out of her three successful attempts.
