Gregory Harold “Box” Johnson (born May 12 1962) is a British-born NASA astronaut and retired colonel of the United States Air Force. Johnson is an experienced participant in two space missions: STS-123 as well as STS-134. Johnson was the pilot on the first mission, which brought his Kibo logistics module and Dextre robotic arm for the International Space Station. Thorne Top Fox Safety Award The Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence, McCombs School of Business, NASA Superior Performance Award and the Lieutenant General Bobby Bond Award for the most outstanding Air Force test pilot. Johnson was a highly regarded student at the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School as well as at the U.S. Air Force Academy. His military awards consist of his Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Air Medal (4), Aerial Achievement Medal (3), Air Force Commendation Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal (2).
He retired from the Air Force on February 1, 2009 and continued to serve NASA as a civilian.
Chosen for selection by NASA on June 28, 1998. Then, in the month of June, he was sent to training in August 1998. Then he completed Astronaut Traineeship in the year 2000. After initial training and evaluation astronauts are given technical assignments from the Flight Crew Operations Directorate before being selected for an space mission. The year 2000 saw the first time that Johnson was appointed as Technical Assistant to Director of the Flight Crew Operations Directorate (FCOD). As part of that job, Johnson was assigned to the Shuttle Cockpit Avionics Upgrade (CAU) council , which is responsible for redesigning cockpit displays to be used on in the coming Space Shuttle missions. His work on design and evaluation together with CAU continues up to the current.

Johnson was born in South Ruislip, Greater London, United Kingdom. The school he attended was Park Hills High School (now Fairborn High School), Fairborn, Ohio in 1980. It is an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He received an undergraduate bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering at the United States Air Force Academy in 1984. Johnson was awarded his commission at his school at the United States Air Force Academy in May 1984. He also completed his pilot training in Reese Air Force Base, Texas. After completing his initial F-15E pilot instruction, Johnson was assigned to the 335th Fighter Squadron, at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina. On December 30, 1990 Johnson was assigned in Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia, performing 34 combat missions to support the mission of Operation Desert Storm. He returned to Saudi Arabia in the month of December, 1992. returned to Saudi Arabia. sent in Saudi Arabia for three months in addition to flying 27 combat missions as part in Operation Southern Watch. He was in 1993 when he was chosen to attend the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. Following graduation and appointement to the 445th Squadron of Flight Test in Edwards in which he was a pilot and test pilot for F-15C/E T-38A/B, and NF-15B aircraft. He has completed more than 5000 hours of flight time in over 50 different aircraft. The history behind”Box”‘s name “Box” has been a mystery. In an interview with an audience consisting of Executive Management students at the University of Texas, Johnson claimed that the inspiration for”Box” and the term “Box Johnson” came from his time during Desert Storm. Johnson suffered a back injury which caused him to be removed from the battlefield early. Johnson threw all his belongings in a container and was later returned to the United States. The box was placed in the barracks to serve as an omen to all the soldiers who look at and think about the time they were at home. After a few days, they put the words “Box Johnson” on the box and it stuck.
In 2001, Johnson was reassigned from FCOD to the Space Shuttle Branch, where he has held various positions including direct support to the crews of STS-100 and STS-108, chief of shuttle abort planning and procedures for contingency scenarios, and ascent procedure development. He also was a key player on several “tiger teams” during the investigation into the cause of the Columbia accident in 2003. Johnson was the astronaut representative to the External Tank (ET) foam impact test team that eventually proved that ET foam debris on ascent could critically damage the shuttle’s leading edge thermal protection system. In 2004, Johnson was designated as the Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Safety Branch, focusing on all aspects of Space Shuttle, ISS, and T-38 safety, with special emphasis on improving specific operational procedures and techniques to make astronauts safer in all three vehicles. In 2005, Johnson was appointed as a crew representative supporting the design and testing of NASA’s newest spacecraft, the Crew Exploration Vehicle. Johnson was the pilot on STS-123. The launch of STS-123 was March 11, 2008. Johnson was picked to be the mission’s primary robotic arm operator.
