On 17 April 1984, he was arrested for the conspiracy against Nicolae Ceaușescu. After weeks of torture he escaped from the Securitate imprisonment. He was captured a few days afterwards, then tried only on the charges of escaping from prison and sentenced to 18 months in jail.
