He is also one of the original cast members of the long-running TV show This Hour Has 22 Minutes. He has been the recipient of many Gemini Awards.
In 2014 Thomey was a co-plainant in a case brought by a judge that took place in Nova Scotia in which a couple was accused of defrauding a number of investors, including Thomey.
As well as his appearance as a host on 22 Minutes, in 1996 Thomey was also featured in a six-part show named Daily Tips for Modern Living which airs through CBC TV.

In 1992 Thomey began working together with Cathy Jones, Rick Mercer and Mary Walsh to create a new TV show that was later renamed This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Thomey was anchorperson Frank MacMillan and created many memorable characters like Jerry Boyle (of the Newfoundland Separation Federation) and Eddie from “That Show Sucked”. The show ended his run as an on-screen actor in 2005 but came back to This Hour as a writer for the 2013/2014 season.
He was the character the character of Brother Glackin on the movie The Boys of St. Vincent. The original stage play Hanlon House, which was initially produced in the Resource Centre for the Arts in St. John’s, went on to be made into short films, and won the Best Short Film award at the Atlantic Film Festival in 1992. Hanlon House was aired on the CBC-TV Arts program later in the year.
Thomey was not hired back for 22 Minutes in August 2018, as several other long-time talent such as Shaun Majumder and multiple veteran writers were also not hired back.
