Stumbo (born August 14 1951) is the ex-Speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives. As a part of the Democratic Party, he served as Kentucky Attorney General from 2004 until 2008. In 2008, he was Kentucky’s Democratic candidate in the election of Attorney General.
Stumbo created an exploratory committee for the Senate seat of Mitch McConnell in 2008, however, he did not enter the Senate seat.

On November 8, 2016, Stumbo was defeated by Republican challenger Larry L. Brown In reaction to this, the Republican Kentucky governor Matt Bevin, who had strongly opposed Stumbo and vice versa, remarked “‘good riddance’…he will not be missed one bit. Kentucky will be better for his absence.”
The office of Stumbo led an inquiry into the practices employed by Kentucky Republican governor Ernie Fletcher which resulted in charges, but the case was dismissed in accordance with the prosecutor. On September 12 in 2007, Stumbo was suing Fletcher for the appointment of excessively numerous Republicans for the leadership boards of the state-owned universities. State law stipulates “proportional representation of the two leading political parties” which is based the voter’s registration. The majority of voters registered throughout Kentucky are Democrats however, Fletcher was appointed by Fletcher seven Republicans along with two Democrats to the University of Kentucky and eight Republicans and two Democrats to the University of Louisville.

Prior to his appointment to the position of attorney general Stumbo was a member of his position in the Kentucky House of Representatives for 12 terms from 1980 until 2003. In that time, Stumbo was the longest-serving Kentucky House Majority Leader (1985-2003). Stumbo came back to the House of Representatives not long after his Attorney General’s term expired.
Stumbo ran as the running partner of Bruce Lunsford in the 2007 Democratic governor’s primary, however their ticket was defeated by that by Steve Beshear and Daniel Mongiardo, 40.9% to 20.4 percent.
On January 6, 2009, he was endorsed by Democratic lawmakers to be the party’s nominee for Speaker of the House. He was sworn in as Speaker the next day, January 7.
