Steube ran for the Republican nomination for Florida’s 17th Congressional District in 2018, a seat that was being vacated by Tom Rooney who declined to seek re-election. He won the Republican primary on August 28, 2018. In the general election on November 6, 2018, he defeated Democrat Allen Ellison, who replaced the original Democratic nominee April Freeman after she died unexpectedly in September.

The State Representative Ron Reagan was unable to run for re-election in 2010, due to term limits Steube ran for the position of his successor in the 67th District located in the southern part of Hillsborough County, eastern Manatee County as well as the northern part of Sarasota County, stretching from Apollo Beach to Fruitville. Steube received an endorsement from United States Congressman Vern Buchanan who said his belief that Steube had been “extremely knowledgeable of the district and the district’s issues.” When he ran in the Republican primary, he had to face Jeremiah J. Guccione and Robert McKann, whom he was able to defeat easily by gaining five-thirds of the votes to Guccione’s 28% , and McCann’s 19 percent. He was able to advance to the general election where he had to face Democratic candidate Z. J. Hafeez and independent candidate John M. Studebaker. Both candidates opposed exploration for offshore oil along the coastline of the state, believed in solar energy and both favored legal reforms for medical torts “that they [felt would] increase access to health care for Floridians.” In the final vote, Steube defeated both his rivals in a decisive manner with 60% of the votes against Hafeez’s 27% and Studebaker’s 5 percent.

William Gregory Steube (born May 19th 1978) is an American Republican politician from Florida and is the U.S. Representative from Florida’s 17th congressional district , which has been in office from January 3rd of 2019. The district covers the vast expanse across south central Florida that extends beginning in the suburbs around Sarasota as well as Fort Myers through the Everglades to the shores Lake Okeechobee. Before his appointment to Congress the incumbent was an official in the Florida Senate for two terms in the area of Sarasota County and western Charlotte County. He was previously a member for three years as a member of the Florida House of Representatives, representing the Sarasota-Manatee region from 2010 until 2016.

Steube was born in Bradenton to Brad Steube, who served as the Sheriff in Manatee County. He was a student at his studies at the University of Florida, receiving an education from the department of Animal Science during the year 2000 followed by receiving his Juris Doctor from the Fredric G. Levin College of Law in 2003. Additionally, while in UF, Steube was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. After completion of the program, Steube joined the United States Army in 2004. He was a member of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 2004 to 2008. He was deployed to Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In 2016, Steube ran for the Florida Senate seat vacated by Nancy Detert, who was term limited. He defeated four other candidates in the Republican primary, receiving 31% of the vote, and won the general election against Democrat Frank Alcock, 59 to 41%.
