Greg Grandin (born 1962) is a historian professor of Yale University. He taught previously in the history department at New York University. He is the author of variety of books which include Fordlandia The rise and The Fall of Henry Ford’s Forgotten Jungle City, which was a finalist in the Pulitzer Prize for History, and also for the National Book Award and a National Book Critics Circle Award. A newer book, titled, who Is Rigoberta Menchu? is a study of the treatment received by Menchu, the Guatemalan Nobel Peace Prize winner. The book he wrote in 2014, The Empire of Necessity: Slavery, Freedom, and the Deception of the New World, is a investigation of the historical foundation for the novel Benito Cereno, written by Herman Melville.

Following the passing of Chavez, Grandin published a long obituary in The Nation, opining that “the biggest problem Venezuela faced during his rule was not that Chavez was authoritarian but that he wasn’t authoritarian enough.”

Grandin is elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in April, 2010.
