Though he was being born in France, Gilmore grew up in the Seattle region. After performing the role in 10 Minute Warning with Duff McKagan (The Fartz and Guns N’ Roses), Steve Verwolf, Paul Dana, Bob Groves along with David Garrigues, Gilmore decided to join Duff McKagan when he announced that he would be moving out of Seattle for a new adventure in L.A and was with the singer in his first auditions. After The Guns N’Roses and his return to Seattle and by the end of the 1980s, Gilmore was part of the critically- acclaimed, legendary Seattle group Mother Love Bone along with the bandmates Andrew Wood (vocals), Bruce Fairweather (guitar), Jeff Ament (bass), and Stone Gossard (guitar). Following Wood’s death due to an overdose of heroin Ament and Gossard were later to play prominent parts on the band Pearl Jam.
Gilmore continued to work in the future with Seattle producers and engineers Jack Endino (formerly of Skin Yard) together with whom he released Angle of Attack (1990) as well as the album by Endino Earthworm (1992). Through the times, Gilmore would collaborate with numerous musicians on projects like The Land’s Archipelago (1997) as well as Doghead’s 1996 album titled “Down on the Upside”. According to the notes on liner for Down on the Upside (1996), Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil mentions Gilmore as the “inspiration” for the song “Never the Machine Forever”.
