Gregory Joseph Colbrunn (born July 26th 1969) is an American former Major League baseball player and hitting coach. A first baseman for the majority of his career Colbrunn was a Fontana, California, native was a part of the Major Leagues for 13 seasons (1992-2004) and played for seven different teams. He batted and threw right-handed and was listed as six feet (1.8 meters) tall and weighed 190 pounds (86 kilograms). He was an assistant to the Boston Red Sox hitting coach in 2013 and 2014 seasons.
Following his playing career’s end at the end of 2005 Colbrunn was a trainer within the Yankees organization. He was employed as the hitting coach to the Charleston RiverDogs of the Single-A South Atlantic League from 2007-09 and from 2011-12. The year 2010 was the first time Colbrunn steered the RiverDogs to 65-74 (.468) record.
Colbrunn returned to Farrell’s staff for 2014. On June 4, he was compelled to take a medical leave of absence after he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage during the Red Sox’ road trip to Cleveland, Ohio, and was hospitalized in the Cleveland Clinic. He returned to his duties on a part-time basis on June 30. However, the 2014 Red Sox struggled offensively all season long, finishing at or near the bottom of the American League in almost every category, including runs scored (12th, with 634). After the 2014 season concluded, Colbrunn stepped down from his position with the Red Sox and declined another assignment within the organization.
Colbrunn, a resident of nearby Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, then returned to the Yankees’ organization and the Charleston RiverDogs as their batting coach for 2015–16. In 2017, the Yankees promoted him to roving minor league hitting coordinator, but he returned to being the hitting coach for the 2019 Charleston team, in order to be closer to his family.
After his initial appearance in Montreal, Colbrunn would also be a part of The Florida Marlins, Minnesota Twins, Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Braves, Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners. He hit over .300 five times throughout the course of his Major League career, and enjoyed his best season with both The Marlins and Diamondbacks and surpassed the 100-games that he played in the years 1995 in 1996, 1995 and 2000. He set personal records on home runs (23) and batted-in runs (89) during the season 1995 Marlins and also accumulated more than 146 hits for the Marlins in the 1995 as well as 1996. He hit .310 in 334 games with the D-Backs with a record-setting .333 score in part-time play in 2002. He scored the entire season on September 18, 2002, in a game against his team, the San Diego Padres.

Colbrunn has graduated from Fontana High School in 1987 and was picked to the Montreal Expos in the sixth round of 1987’s Major League Baseball draft, declining a scholarship offered by Stanford University to begin his professional career in baseball. Despite having missed the entire 1991 season because of an injury, Colbrunn climbed to the top of Montreal farm system, and made the MLB debut for the Expos on the 9th of July 1992. He also hit a single in his debut at bat against Francisco Oliveras of the San Francisco Giants.
