In the early 1990s, when being a student in Tulane, Capps started a band he called The House Levelers; the music of the group has been called “thrash- folk”. Additionally, while studying at Tulane, Capps started a blues-rock band named Stavin Chain. The band released one self-titled album prior to breaking up. In 2004, some of Capps songs were featured in the soundtrack for the documentary A Love Song for Bobby Long that was based off a novel written by Capps father. In the year 2011, Capps and his band the Lost Cause Minstrels released an album, also titled Lost Cause Minstrels, on Royal Potato Family Records.

Capps made his debut solo album called When You Knew My Mind in 2005, on Hyena Records. The second album he released, Wail & Ride, was released in 2006 by the same label. It was and was followed with Rott & Roll in 2008. Rott & Roll is recorded with a band dubbed under the moniker of the Stumpknockers.
