He was awarded in 1997 the Whitbread Best Biography Prize in 1997 for Victor Hugo, and was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize for Rimbaud in 2001. Born in Manchester and later in the historical county of Lancashire He attended his school at the Royal Grammar School, Worcester and then went on to Exeter College, Oxford to learn Modern Languages and graduating with the highest grade at the age of 1982 (BA (Oxon) in the process of completing MA).
