On the 12th of December, 2013 Hughes was named to be the winner SOS Island the Survivor-style show starring Les Stroud which relied on social media to advertise Samsung products in an island in the desert. It was awarded $100,000 for an island adventure of his preferred destination. Hughes decided to purchase the Island in Bocas Del Toro, Panama by acquiring it from his fellow British aventurer Ian Usher. Hughes named it “Jinja Island” and lived there without electricity for the better three years of his life.
