In 1986, Fellows came up with John Shuttleworth, a middle-aged hopeful singer- songwriter born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, with a calm demeanor and somewhat nerdy tendencies. His talents in music are typically manifested through his portable Yamaha PSS680 keyboard as well as his catalog of songs, which includes tracks such as “Pigeons in Flight” – an original song that Shuttleworth tried to select to be the winner of his entry into the Eurovision Song Contest. A spoof documentary on the process of submitting an entry for Eurovision which was titled Europigeon which featured past Eurovision stars such as Clodagh Rodgers Lynsey de Paul Bruce Welch, Katrina Leskanich (from Katrina and the Waves), Johnny Logan, Cheryl Baker and Brotherhood of Man. He has released a range of albums and singles under the name John Shuttleworth.

Fellows is a student of drama of Manchester Polytechnic when he first became famous in the month of August 1978 when he was the singer with the same name of the hit record “Jilted John”, a first-person story of a resentful teenager who’s girlfriend Julie had separated from him to another guy named Gordon, “just ’cause he’s better lookin’ than me, just ’cause he’s cool and trendy”. Two follow-up singles were released the same year under the guise of “Gordon the Moron”. A pseudo concept-album also produced by Hannett followed, entitled True Love Stories, charting John’s love-life – and two further singles, neither of which was a hit. No other recordings followed these, making Jilted John a one-hit wonder. However, a cash-in single by Julie and Gordon sold moderately well, as did lapel badges bearing the legends “Gordon is a moron” and “Gordon is not a moron”.
