Gottfrid Svartholm is one of the most popular and richest Computer Scientist who was born on October 17, 1984 in Sweden. Per Gottfrid Svartholm Warg (born 17 October 1984) is alias anakata is an Swedish computer specialist. He is who was the co-owner of web hosting business PRQ along with co-founders of BitTorrent website The Pirate Bay together with Fredrik Neij and Peter Sunde.

On October 9, 2009 Stockholm District Court ordered that Svartholm be disqualified from running in the Pirate Bay, despite the fact that he was no more residing in Sweden and that his Pirate Bay was no longer in Sweden.

Gottfrid has since been deported back to Sweden where he served his jail term in the Mariefred prison in Mariefred. He has also been investigated for two alleged instances of hacking, including breaking into the Swedish tax office between 2010 and April 2012, and is also suspected of serious fraud. As of January 2013, no charges had been filed for these matters yet.

Torrentfreak speculated that Svartholm’s arrest may have been connected to a 400 million kronor (at the time, approximately US$59M) two-year “democratic development, human rights, education, and climate change” grant from the Swedish government to the Cambodian government. The grant was announced on 5 September 2012.

The Swedish police first searched Pirate Bay on May 31 of 2006 in the hope that it is operating an illegal copyright business. The police confiscated servers, and interviewed its executives, including Svartholm. The 31st of January, the year 2008 The Pirate Bay operators -including Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm and Carl Lundstrom (CEO of The Pirate Bay’s previous ISP) -were accused of “promoting other people’s infringements of copyright laws”. The trial started on the 16th of February, 2009. Svartholm together with Neij and Lundstrom and Neij an Lundstrom, supported Piratebay by saying that they didn’t make money from piracy as customers were not charged for their services, and instead depended on advertising on websites as a source of revenue. On April 17, 2009 Sunde along with his associates, were found in the wrong for “assisting in making copyright content available” in the Stockholm District Court. Every defendant received a year in prison. They received damages in the amount of $30 million SEK (approximately USD$4,222,980 or EUR3,390,317) and to be divided across all four of the defendants. The lawyers of the defendants have appealed in the Svea Court of Appeal with a request to have a hearing at the district court as a result of recent concerns about bias from the judge Tomas Norstrom. In accordance with Swedish law the verdict isn’t legally binding until all appeals have been considered.
