Goretti Kyomuhendo is one of the most popular and richest Novelist who was born on August 1, 1965 in Uganda. Goretti Kyomuhendo (born 1 August 1965) is a Ugandan writer and activist in the field of literature. Participant at the first International Literature Festival Berlin in 2001, Kyomuhendo has been recognised for her “internationally renowned novels.” In addition, she has been recognized from African literary circles due to her work from 1997 until 2007 as the inaugural Programs Coordinator of FEMRITE, the Uganda Women Writers’ Association, and for her creation of the African Writers Trust during 2009, following her move in London, Great Britain, in the year 2008.

Kyomuhendo’s debut graphic novel Sara and the Boy Soldier (2001) was written for UNICEF-ESARO on child soldiers in Africa was given a mediocre review from GoodReads. Kyomuhendo has written a variety of children’s stories and books but they haven’t been widely reviewed as of yet.

Regarding FEMRITE in general during the period when Kyomuhendo was Programmes Coordinator, Monica Arac de Nyeko in her 2007 interview with the BBC declared: “FEMRITE has definitely had a positive impact on the Ugandan literary scene, particularly in forging a space for women’s voices to be heard. Perhaps as recently as the mid nineties there was a clear absence of women’s writing. FEMRITE came in, stormed the writing scene and is now a remarkable addition to our literary landscape.”

Kyomuhendo’s third novel, Waiting: A Novel of Uganda’s Hidden War (2007), has garnered the most international recognition to date. Publishers Weekly described Waiting as “a sensitive, slowly unraveling observation of daily life in a remote Ugandan village as Amin’s marauding soldiers approach on their retreat north.” A reviewer for Book Loons praised Waiting as “a complex and disturbing story told with almost a touch of sweetness to it, through the eyes of a young girl forced to grow up before her time.” Kirkus Reviews, the New Statesman, Pambazuka News, and the Mail & Guardian Online (South Africa) among others also provided favourable notice.

As one of the founding members of FEMRITE and as the initial Programmes Coordinator of the FEMRITE between 1997 and 2007 Kyomuhendo is often acknowledged by younger members of FEMRITE as having been crucial to their growth and growth. Ayeta Anne Wangusa during an interview interview Peter Nazareth of Iowa University she fondly recalls Kyomuhendo for being “a tough lady” who did not hesitate to ask answers until she was able to get Wangusa’s debut novel Memoirs of a Mother (1998) published. Mildred Barya is a poet who joined FEMRITE in 1997, and later was awarded the Ugandan National Book Trust Award in 2002 for her collection of poetry Men Love Chocolates But They Don’t Say (2002) She has stated: “from her (Kyomuhendo), I did not only acquire knowledge in publishing dynamics, but my writing improved, my poetry soared to the skies, I was set free, so I flew.”

Maria Goretti Kyomuhendo was born and grew up in Hoima, Western Uganda. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) English Studies degree (2003), from the University of Natal, Durban, South Africa, and a Master’s of Arts in Creative Writing (2005), from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban. In 2003, Kyomuhendo was awarded a Graduate Scholarship for academic excellence by the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She was the first Ugandan woman writer to be declared an Honorary Fellow in Writing at the University of Iowa, 1997, after participating in the International Writing Program of Iowa.
