Gopi Shankar Madurai is one of the most popular and richest Indigenist who was born on April 13, 1991 in Madurai, India. Gopi Shankar Madurai (Tamil: koopi ssngkr mturai born 13 April 1991) is an Indian equal rights and Indigenous rights activist. Shankar was among the youngest, as well as the first genderqueer and intersex openly candidate in the 2016’s Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. Shankar is the person who founded the Srishti Madurai Student Volunteer Collective. Shankar’s work influenced to the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) to order the Government of Tamil Nadu to ordain a ban on sexual reconstitution surgeries for intersex children. In December of 2017, Shankar became a member of the Executive Board of ILGA Asia.

Shankar petitioned the case of Asian Games medalist Santhi Soundarajan who was stripped of her medal after a gender test to the State and Central Government. Shankar launched multiple complaints on behalf of athlete Santhi in National Commission for Scheduled Castes and National Human Rights Commission of India also initiated Justice For Santhi Campaign which was instrumental in fetching her a permanent posting as athletic coach in Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority in December 2016.
Shankar and transwoman S. Swapna staged a protest in the Madurai collectorate on October 7, 2013 in order to demand reservation and allow trans women to participate for the examinations conducted through TNPSC, UPSC, SSC and Bank Exams. Then, Swapna successfully moved the Madras High Court in 2013 asking for permission to take an exam for the TNPSC Group II examination as a woman candidate.

Shankar was born Sarvapunya in the Sellur slum of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. At fourteen years of age, Shankar started volunteering Ramakrishna Mission. In the following years, Shankar was admitted as a probationer in order to be monks within the Ramakrishna Math. The year 2005 was the time Shankar received spiritual introduction to the lineage spiritual of Swami Vivekananda by Swami Gitanandaji (Former Vice-President of Ramakrishna Math and Mission) who is also a disciple of Swami Virajananda. In April of 2010 Shankar quit Ramakrishna Math to pursue Religion as well as Philosophy and Sociology study in The American College in Madurai (affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University). Gopi is a student at Yoga for over 15 years. He also served as a Yoga instructor for five years. Shankar also arranged the first Asian Genderqueer Pride Parade at Madurai. Shankar also launched LGBTQIA classes in a few schools and universities . Shankar is also an youthful panelist in a chair shared by the University Grants Commission of India (UGC) and Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR) sponsors of National Seminars in India, Shankar led more than 85 seminars and interactive workshops about Gender & Sexuality for 8000 students in Madurai. Shankar created the regional Tamil term for people who are genderqueer and also wrote Maraikkappatta Pakkangal the first book about Gender-Variants written in Tamil. In April of 2015, Shankar was invited by Tiruchi Siva to attend the passage of the historical Rights of Transgender Persons Bill 2014 in the Rajya Sabha upper house of the Parliament of India. In recognition of his contributions as a minority gender towards Hinduism, Shankar was presented “Young Hindu Award” by the writer Aravindan Neelakandan, Joe D Cruz at the 6th Hindu Spiritual Services Fair.
