In the 2018 general election, Gooi contested for the Bukit Tengah state seat of the Penang State Legislative Assembly instead and won it in a five-corner fight.

Gooi Hsiao-Leung (simplified Chinese: 魏晓隆 ; traditional Chinese: 魏曉隆 ; pinyin: Wèi Xiǎolóng ; born 28 December 1972) is a Malaysian politician. He is the incumbent Penang State Legislative Assemblyman for Bukit Tengah and also the former Member of the Parliament of Malaysia for the Alor Setar constituency in the state of Kedah, Malaysia for one term (2013-2018). He is a member of the People’s Justice Party (PKR) in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. He is the son of Gooi Hock Seng, former DAP Member of Parliament and State Assemblyman, through multiple election campaigns in the 80s and 90s.
