Gonen Segev is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 6, 1956 in Kiryat Motzkin, Haifa District, Israel. Gonen Segev (Hebrew: gvnn SHgb born on June 6, 1956) is a former Minister of Energy & Infrastructure of Israel and a member of the Knesset and a pediatric physician. In 2005, he was found guilty of fraud, forgery and fraud with credit cards and of attempting to traffic in drugs. In the year 2019, he was found guilty of spying on Iran and sent to prison for 11 years. prison.

In August of 2018, Mahmoud Alavi, Iran’s intelligence minister, said to the reporters “you have recently heard that we brought under our control a member of a cabinet of a powerful country.” In the Times of Israel, his comments were taken to mean that he acknowledged that Segev was a member of the government of Iran even though that he didn’t name Segev or clarify the country.

In June 2018, the Shin Bet and Israel Police announced that he had been arrested under suspicion of spying for Iranian intelligence. According to Israeli intelligence, Segev was recruited in Nigeria by Iranian Embassy officials in 2012, initially being lured to the Iranian Embassy on the pretext of treating children of diplomatic staff. He traveled twice to Iran to meet his handlers, and met with Iranian agents in apartments and hotels around the world. He received secret communications equipment for encoding messages between him and his handlers. He maintained contacts with Israelis involved in defense and foreign relations, and worked to put Israeli officials in contact with Iranian intelligence operatives while passing them off as innocuous businessmen. In May 2018, Segev was refused admission to Equatorial Guinea due to his criminal record and subsequently extradited to Israel, where he was interrogated and indicted for espionage, aiding the enemy in a time of war, and providing information to the enemy in the Jerusalem District Court. According to Israeli authorities, Segev did not deny his contacts with Iranian officials, but claimed that he was acting as a double agent in the hopes of restoring his tarnished reputation and returning to Israel as a hero.

On 9 January 2019, Segev pleaded guilty to charges of espionage for repeatedly meeting with Iranian intelligence officials and supplying them with information. As part of a plea deal negotiated with prosecutors, the more serious charges of aiding an enemy during war time were dropped and he would be sentenced to 11 years in prison. He was formally sentenced on 26 February.

Following his political career, Segev decided to pursue his business career. In April 2004, Segev was detained for trying to transport many ecstasy tablet in Amsterdam to Israel which he claimed he believed were M&M’s. He was caught illegally extending his passport diplomatically using pencil in order to keep from being examined by Dutch airport officials. He also retracted cash from an automated machine for teller transactions located in Hong Kong, after claiming that his credit card had been stolen. Security cameras had recorded footage of him inside the machine. He was found guilty in the plea bargain of the smuggling of drugs and forgery and sentenced to 5 years in prison. In August 2006, an Israeli court ruled against his request to shorten his prison sentence. In March 2007, his medical license was suspended. He filed an appeal to have his license reinstated in the Jerusalem District Court, but the appeal was rejected. He was released from jail in 2007 when his parole committee decided that they would cut his time in jail by a third based on his good conduct. In order to practice medicine, he was banned in Israel the Segev travelled to Nigeria to become physician. Segev worked as a physician for Israeli diplomatic personnel in Abuja as well as members from the nearby Jewish community. He also received the prestigious letter by the Israeli Foreign Ministry for saving the life of an Israeli security personnel’s lives. He asked to have his Israeli Health Ministry reinstate his medical license to allow him to continue his medical career in Israel. The request was turned down. When he spoke to Israeli press, the journalist claimed “I’ve decided I’m not coming back to Israel unless I can return with my head held high as ‘Dr. Gonen Segev’ with a permit to work… not as ‘the former convict Gonen Segev.”

In the beginning of 1990 Segev was involved in the Tzomet party, which was founded by Rafael Eitan. In 1992, he got elected into the 13th Knesset following Tzomet had gained eight seats. At 35 years old He was among the youngest members elected in the Knesset. Because his Labor Party was the largest party at the time, it was the one that formed the government, while left-wing Tzomet party remained in opposition. Segev was an opposition MK and was a Knesset member.
