Goli Ameri (Persian: gly the mry; born Goli Yazdi born on September 26th 1956) is an American businesswoman and former diplomat. She is co-founder of the mobile-based technology platform StartitUp that offers resources to entrepreneurs in the process of starting their own businesses. She was the previous under secretary general of Humanitarian Values and Diplomacy for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. She was also an ex- U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Cultural and Educational Affairs. She was a candidate as a candidate for Congress in the U.S. House of Representatives as an Republican in 2004 and is also a ex- U.S. Representative to the United Nations. She sits as a trustee on the board for the non- governmental international organization Freedom House, as well as the Center for Middle East Public Policy advisory board of the RAND Corporation A group of both private and public sector executives who offer guidance and support to the RAND Corporation’s Middle East research.

In 2004 Ameri was chosen in 2004 by George W. Bush as one of the three participants in the United States’ delegation to the 61st session United Nations Commission on Human Rights which is held annually each year in Geneva, Switzerland.

In 2004, Ameri handily defeated moderate, small businessman Tim Phillips and conservative, software executive Jason Meshell by a 2-1 margin each to become the Oregon Republican Party’s nominee for Oregon’s 1st congressional district , in a challenge to three-term incumbent Democrat David Wu.

In the summer of 2005, President Bush appointed Ameri as the head of the United States’ delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, which is headquartered in New York City. There, she worked on UN Management Reform, the creation of the UN Human Rights Council and, due to her background in the field of high-technology, on the Internet Governance Portfolio. She was sworn in by then-U.N. Ambassador John R. Bolton in September 2005 and served until the end of the session in December. She was confirmed retroactively by the United States Senate for this position on May 26, 2006.

Ameri is a native of Tehran, Iran. She moved in America United States as a student in 1974 and enrolled at Stanford University. In Stanford, she graduated with an B.A. in Communication as well as French Literature and, later she completed her M.A. in Communication. She also completed her studies at The Sorbonne at Paris, France. She was made an U.S. citizen in 1989.
