Born on March 12, 1958, in Christchurch, Harper was trained as teacher in secondary schools and was awarded a certificate of teacher training at the Christchurch Teacher’s College during the year 1980. Harper then went on to his studies at the University of Canterbury, graduating with an bachelor of Arts degree in 1981. After earning an Master of Arts degree the following year, with an essay on the fall of Singapore and his move to Australia and began teaching in Catholic school located in New South Wales.

In the year 2011, Harper became a project director for the release of First World War Centenary Print Histories A series of books about New Zealand’s involvement in during the First World War. Harper wrote one volume in the series called Johnny Enzed The Story of a New Zealand Soldier in the First World War, which was released in 2015. In 2012, in appreciation of his contributions in the field of historical research, Harper was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal.

Harper was granted an Fulbright Senior Scholarship in 2010 and completed five months of study in the Virginia Military Institute and the US Army’s War College on the Battle of Monte Cassino. The results led to the publication of a book on the issue in 2013.

Glyn John Harper, QSM (born on 12 March, 1958) is a New Zealand historian who specializes in the history of military during in the early 20th century. Harper has written several books on the participation of New Zealand of both the First Second and Second World Wars.

The year 1988 was when Harper began his career in the Australian Army where he spent eight years in the army before moving into the New Zealand Army. Harper was awarded an Doctor of Philosophy in 2001 from the University of New England with an essay on Howard Kippenberger, a New Zealand general from his time during the Second World War. Harper is the chief historian of New Zealand’s military operations towards East Timor from 1999 to 2001. Harper was discharged from his position in the New Zealand Army in 2001 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was appointed a lecturer at Massey University in Palmerston North and was appointed an associate professor of military studies in the year following. In 2003, he was named Director of the Centre for Defence Studies. The current position is Professor of War Studies in Massey University, and supervises doctoral students.

As well as his non-fiction historical works for adults, Harper has written several children’s picture books with military themes, including Le Quesnoy, Roly, the Anzac Donkey, and Bobby the Littlest War Hero. His work for children has received several platitudes including, in 2015, the Best Picture Book Award at the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults for his book Jim’s Letters, which was illustrated by Jenny Cooper.
