De Piero was born on 21 December 1972 in Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, England to Giorgio and Maddalena De Piero. Both parents were Italian immigrants who emigrated into Bradford in the United Kingdom (UK) to work in Bradford’s textile mills. Her father was diagnosed with an illness of mental health at nine years old. The result was that he needed admissions to psychiatric hospitals all through her early years. The condition of his mind meant it was impossible for him to continue to work. De Piero’s mother quit her job to take care of his needs, while her family relied on benefits.
In October of 2010, Labour leader Ed Miliband named De Piero as a shadow minister of culture. The reshuffle of 2011 saw De Piero became Shadow Minister for Crime Prevention and, in 2013 she was elevated into the cabinet shadows as the Shadow Minister of Women and Equalities.
De Piero married James Robinson in 2012. Robinson was a media correspondent at The Guardian, media editor at The Observer and an employee at PR firm Powerscourt. He was the director of communications for former deputy leader of the Labour Party Tom Watson.
De Piero supported the UK remaining within the European Union (EU) in the 2016 UK EU membership referendum, and was present with Corbyn at the launch of the Labour In for Britain campaign. Approximately 70% of her constituents voted for the UK to leave the EU. She supported Owen Smith in the failed attempt to replace Corbyn in the 2016 Labour leadership election.
De Piero began her career in journalism when she worked as a researcher on TV’s Jonathan Dimbleby show. After that, she moved to BBC which she joined as a reporter for On the Record. While at the BBC she also completed her master’s qualification from Birkbeck, University of London. From 2003 until 2010, she was GMTV’s political editor of GMTV.

Gloria De Piero (born 21 December 1972) is a former British Labour Party politician and journalist. Her first election was in the role of the Parliamentary Member (MP) of Ashfield in the year 2010. She was in the shadow cabinet, under the leadership of Ed Miliband and Jeremy Corbyn. The most notable of these was being the shadow Secretary of State Women and Equalities between October 2013 until September 2015, as well as the Shadow Justice Minister from July 2017 and July 2019. The Minister announced her decision to quit politics in the same year when she left the Labour frontbench in July 2019. Before being a politician, she worked as the political editor at GMTV.
She went to Yorkshire Martyrs Catholic College where she was awarded five GCSEs and Bradford College where she gained two D A Levels. As a child, De Piero was a part of the Socialist Organiser, and joined the Labour Party’s student section Labour Students at the age of 18. De Piero then studied sociology at the University of Central England (now Birmingham City University) and the University of Westminster and graduated with a degree in sociology. She was also involved in The Labour Students’ campaign in 1996 and 1997 as one of the national officers who was based in London. After the general election in 1997, which saw Labour winning in a landslide, Labour Party winning in a overwhelming majority, De Piero applied for various government positions, including an adviser to the special advisor as well as a researcher for the Parliamentary Research Institute, and at left-wing think- tanks but was not able to secure employment.
In February 2010, De Piero resigned as GMTV’s political editor to seek selection as the Labour candidate for the Ashfield constituency in the 2010 general election. The candidacy became vacant following the announcement that the constituency’s Labour MP, former Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon, would be stepping down at the election. On 21 March, she was selected as the party’s candidate. De Piero was elected with a majority of 192 votes (reduced from 10,213 in 2005) after a 17.2% swing to the Liberal Democrats. During her election campaign, it was reported that she had posed for topless photographs for a modelling agency at the age of 15. Three years later, an unnamed news agency attempted to buy the photographs on behalf of a national newspaper. It later emerged that The Mail on Sunday had purchased the photographs in 2010. De Piero issued a legal warning to the newspaper that she had been underage when the photographs were taken and the negatives were returned to her with an apology.
