In 1992, at the age of 24 the senator was elected as a member of the Rhode Island State Senate; at that moment, he had been most youthful state senator in the country. In the state legislature, he was on the Corporations and Labor Committees, as well as the secretary of the Joint Committee for Veteran’s Affairs , as and Director for the Rhode Island State Lottery. He resigned from the state legislature in order to contest for the position of the position of Rhode Island’s Lieutenant Governor taking the title in 1994’s Republican Primary at 26 years old. In 2006 He ran to run for Delaware State Senate, losing to James T. Vaughn.
