Giles William Thomas Foden was born in Warwickshire in the year 1967. He was being the child of Jonathan Foden, who was an agricultural consultant and Mary who was farmer. Following the death of his grandfather the family sold their farm, and in 1972 relocated to Malawi in the south-eastern region of Africa. Foden studied in Yarlet Hall, and Malvern College boarding schools, and later at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he studied English as well as later at St John’s College, Cambridge. Foden initially worked as a reporter for Media Week magazine. Later, he was an assistant editor for The Times Literary Supplement and from 1995 to 2006 he was deputy literary editor for The Guardian. He is now an Associate Professor of Creative and Performing Arts of Royal Holloway, University of London and a professor of Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, is still contributing in The Guardian and other journals.

He made a donation of his short tale “(One Last) Throw of the Dice” to Oxfam’s Ox-Tales project, which is a collection of UK stories by 38 writers. The story was published within The Water collection. His most recent book Turbulence is a story about the interest of the military in meteorology during the Second World War.

Foden’s debut novel, The the Last King Of Scotland (1998) The novel, which was published in 1998, is set in Idi Amin’s reign in Uganda during the 1970s. It won the Whitbread First Novel Award, a Somerset Maugham Award, a Betty Trask Award and the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize. The film feature, The Last King of Scotland (2006) with Forest Whitaker, is based on the novel of Foden with a few variations, and Foden himself appears in a short appearance as a journalist in an Amin’s media conference. The sequel to his novel, Ladysmith (1999), is set in the Anglo-Boer War in 1899 and is the tale of a young girl, Bella Kiernan, who finds herself caught with Ladysmith’s Siege of Ladysmith. The novel was in response to the letters that Foden wrote to his great grandfather, Arthur Foden, a British soldier serving in his regiment, the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the war.
