Gijsbert Marius “Gijs” de Vries (born 22 February 1956) is a former american-born Dutch political figure and diplomat from the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and later, the Democrats 66 (D66) party.

Prior to 2010, he had been an active participant in the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). However, following discontent with the decision of the VVD to establish an unelected minority government with the backing by the Party for Freedom led by Geert Wilders, he resigned from this party, and joined social-liberal Democrats 66.

He resigned his post in March of 2007 due to personal reasons. However, it is widely believed that the post’s mandate did not have the required operational power and also an overall disinclination within states that are members to share information on anti-terror efforts even though members of the group fully supported appointment of the anti-terrorism coordinator following the 2004, Madrid terrorist attacks on trains. In September 2007 MEPs requested the position to be filled, which had it been unfilled for more than six months and to be given the real power to fulfill the duties of the post. On the 20th of September, 2007 The Belgian Gilles de Kerchove was named to succeed De Vries in the post.
