Gianni Cuperlo, born on 3 September in Trieste. He was a student at his school, the Francesco Petrarca lyceum, at when he began to be fascinated by student politics. It was at this time when he joined the Italian Communist Youth Federation (FGCI).

His time in Sinistra Giovanile ended in 1992 in the year 1992, when he left from the section for youth and become the head of the adult Democratic Party of the Left and changed its name shortly afterward in the year 2000 to Democratici di Sinistra (Democrats of the Left). In 2001, Cuperlo was appointed to the party’s governing National Secretariat of the new party, taking on the responsibility as director for Communications for the party.

Cuperlo was a founding member of the Democratic Party, successor to Democrats of the Left, in 2007.

On 21 January 2014 Cuperlo resigned as chairman of the Democratic Party, stating disagreements with the party’s direction as the reason.

Cuperlo along with his Italian Communist Youth Federation followed following the lead of the adult political party in October of 1990, re-establishing it as a broad organization known as Sinistra Giovanile (Left Youth). Cuperlo continued to be the leader of the national level of the newly formed organization.

Following the completion of his lyceum studies in the year the year 1980 Cuperlo began his studies at Bologna University. University of Bologna, from where he received an honors degree with his bachelor’s thesis in mass communication.

Cuperlo stood for election to the Chamber of Deputies (lower house) of the Italian parliament in the elections of 2006 and 2008, and was elected both times. At the time of his 2006 election, Cuperlo resigned as communications director of the Democratici di Sinistra to concentrate on parliament.
