He is head of CPA (Association of Professional cyclists). On November 12, 2012 in following Lance Armstrong’s doping scandal, Lance Armstrong doping scandal, the CPA president demanded an independent anti-doping organization be set up. He said that the UCI cannot be trusted to uphold the rules.
Bugno retired after the road season of 1998 and is currently an emergency helicopter pilot. Bugno piloted the camera helicopter during the Tour of Lombardy, on 20 October 2007 and throughout the 2008 Giro d’Italia. He was a candidate for a seat on Lombard Regional Council in the Lombard regional election of 2010, for the centre-left party coalition, but the election was not his.

Bugno’s performance during his performance in the Grand Tours, however, was eclipsed in the Grand Tours by Miguel Indurain. Bugno’s win in the Giro d’Italia in 1990 is thought to be to be among the best races of the year -He took the lead from beginning to end. While he was victorious in his first Giro the year before, Bugno was second behind Indurain at the Tour de France in 1991 and third after Indurain as well as Claudio Chiappucci in 1992. In an epic battle during the 1992 Tour, Indurain kept his cool despite Chiappucci’s assault in Chiappucci’s attack in the Alps; Bugno had to chase him and then break during the last part in the final stage. Indurain has been quoted saying Bugno was his greatest threat during the Tour.
Bugno’s biggest achievement was his double win at his first World Championship. In 1991, he beat Steven Rooks of the Netherlands and Miguel Indurain of Spain, and in 1992, he finished just ahead Laurent Jalabert of France and Dmitri Konyshev from Russia.
