The year 1986 saw Brancatelli was shifted to the Tom Walkinshaw racing team, where he raced the Rover Vitesse in the 1986 FIA International Touring Car Championship (essentially the rebranded ETCC) However, he was relegated to 12th place in the standings and only won once in Andestorp. In 1987, the Italian driver was back on the teams, this time driving the BMW M3 for Italian outfit CiBiemme Sport in the 1987 World Touring Car Championship where Brancatelli was paired with previous Formula One driver Johnny Cecotto to win the 500km race de Bourgogne of Dijon Prenois. He was eighth overall in WTCC and was 5th at the ETCC and also for CiBiemme and twice winning in Estoril in addition to Zolder.

Brancatelli also raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on five occasions. His best finish was second place in the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans driving a Sauber C9 for Team Sauber Mercedes, co-driving with ex-Formula One drivers Mauro Baldi and Kenny Acheson. His four other races at Le Mans (1979, 1980, 1986 and 1990) all saw him fail to finish the race.

Brancatelli would continue racing until his retirement in the late 1990s.

Apart from his win at the ETCC, Brancatelli’s most notable successes in racing for touring cars included his 1985 Guia Race of Macau driving the Volvo 240T, and the 1989 Spa 24 Hours driving an Eggenberger Ford Sierra RS500 along with Bernd Schneider (yet another F1 driver, but this time one who is currently in the race) along with Win Percy. In the latter half of the 1980s and into the 1990s Brancatelli traveled to Australia to compete for the Bathurst 1000 touring car race but success would typically be elusive for him. The best result was the 1987 WTCC round, which was the 1988 James Hardie 1000 where he as well as Johnny Cecotto would finish 7th outright and 3rd overall however, as they were among the very first WTCC drivers to complete the race, they were awarded the top prize for the race. Three other races on the track at Bathurst in 1989 1991, 1990, and 1989 ended in two failures to finish the race and one disqualification because of an technical violation.
