Gian Paolo Montali (born on January 18 1960 in Traversetolo in the province of Parma) is a Italian volleyball coach who been a winner of 2 Volleyball European Championships with Italian national team.

It’s not easy for Montali to get to where he is without having a win. In 1998, he was intrigued to a new and exciting idea taking over the reigns of the team that was newly formed of Rome with the help of famous but aged champions like Andrea Gardini or Marco Bracci and to try to achieve something even after a lack of wins over the course of twenty years. In 2000, at Palaeur in Rome beating the record for crowds to a stadium for Italian tennis, his squad won the scudetto beating Andrea Giani’s Las Daytona Modena. The victory is largely attributable to Montali’s skill in team-moulding and tactics.

In 2005 Italy confirmed as Europe’s leading, winning a gold in the final against a physically superior Russia. The team and the coach received awards for their role in maintaining high interest in volleyball in their country at the Palazzo del Quirinale from the Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

Following a brief parenthesis with the second Schio’s team Montali was appointed to head Sisley Treviso the property of the Benetton family that had not had much success despite its strong financial investments. Montali proved his abilities and his work ethic at the new position and won 2 national titles, one European Winners’, another European Cup Winner’s, 1 CEV and two Italian Cups. In 1996, he was named the head coach of the Greek powerful club Olympiacos Piraeus, and coached Olympiacos Piraeus through the Greek Championship in 1997-1998 , and 2 Greek Cups (1996-1997 1997-1998).

Montali began his career as a coach of his junior side of Santal Parma (Calisto Tanzi’s club). From 1986 until 1990, he was the head coach of the senior teamand won an impressive scudetto during the final season (together with three European Cup Winner’s Cups and two Italian Cups).
