Ghada Shouaa (Arabic: Gd@ sh born on 10 September 1972) is a retired Syrian athlete in the heptathlon. In 1996, at the Summer Olympics she was awarded the first and only Olympic silver medal.
On a trip in Syria during 2013 and 2014 Shouaa made an appearance in a photograph with a large machine gun, while accompanied by his National Defence Forces (Syria) which is a division of the Syrian Armed Forces. In an address, Shouaa greeted the Syrian Arab Army and said that the motto of the army, ‘Homeland’ Honour, Honesty’ represents “each and every honest Syrian form which he/she draws the ability for steadfastness and making achievements for Syria’s sake”.
A serious injury was the reason for her to miss the next season, and she was not able to return to the top of the list in 1999. She finished third in the World Championships behind Eunice Barber. Shouaa tried to defend her Olympic title in Sydney however, she suffered injuries and didn’t even complete the first race. After her disappointment she decided to withdraw from athletics.

Born in the tiny Syrian city Mhardeh located in Hama Governorate, Shouaa’s first sport was basketball. She was a member of the Syrian national team for a couple of years, before she decided to try athletics. She competed in her first heptathlon in the year 1991 and was then immediately invited into the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, which she finished in the bottom position. Her first athletics season by winning an Olympic silver medal at the Asian championships.
