The month of August was when Gete Wami dropped out of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Marathon, after being in the lead pack for a large portion of the race. She was also dropped by her co-teammate Berhane Adere.

In 2007 Gete took home the Berlin Marathon again. She ran at the New York Marathon thirty-five days later , and she came in 23 seconds slower than Paula Radcliffe. The second place finish earned she victory in the World Marathon Majors Series Title and a jackpot of $500,000.
