Gerry Alanguilan was born within the town of San Pablo, Laguna in the Philippines. According to family lore their surname was initially San Gabriel and they trace their roots to the barangay/barrio of Sta. Catalina which is today an area of San Pablo City and known as “Sandig” before the Spanish conquerors. The reason for their name change was believed to be because a witch had placed curses that made them homeless throughout seven generations. Alanguilan used this story as the foundation for his tale San Dig 1944 in the Siglo: Freedom anthology. The term “alanguilan” is itself is the tagalog name for Cananga odorata which is a flowering tree that is now more well-known as the Spanish variation in its name “Ylang-ylang.”

Alanguilan’s first submissions were for Marvel Comics around 1986, when he was still at school. Though these early submissions were rejected but Alanguilan was nonetheless pleased his rejection letter proved that at a minimum the top executives at Marvel were aware of the artist and the work he did. The first time he sent proposals and getting rejections lasted for about seven years, and during that time Alanguilan made submissions to Marvel as well as DC Comics.

In the mid-1990s, Alanguilan began to be known as an inker for American comic book titles like Wetworks, X-Men, Superman: Birthright, Wolverine, High Roads, Fantastic Four, and Silent Dragon, sometimes working alongside fellow Filipino comic book creators Leinil Francis Yu and Whilce Portacio.

Alanguilan temporarily gave up on comics from 1993 to 1994. In his own blogpost, as reported by GMA News Online’s Victor Rosero, he recounted:”From 1993 to 1994 I never drew anything. I went back to Architecture and worked as a draftsman and construction supervisor. I thought comics and I were done. But if comics is in your blood there’s no discouragement strong enough to keep you from drawing. And I eventually went back.”
