Kaltenbrunner was previously attempting climbing K2 six times before eventually succeeded on August 23rd 2011 during her seventh trip to K2. National Geographic supported the expedition and gave a spectacular report of the incredible North Pillar climb.

On the 6th of August, 2010 Fredrik Ericsson was with Kaltenbrunner in his quest to the top of K2. Ericsson fell down 1,000m (3,300 feet) and died. Kaltenbrunner who saw Ericsson fell, canceled her attempt at the summit.
