He finished his first year, and was in school until 2001, when he made the decision to take up sports full-time.
2003 Pienaar again won the South African Championship and threw a personal best of 84.50 in Hyderabad, India. This qualified Pienaar for the Olympic games in Athens, Greece.
2004 Pienaar held on to his National Champion title and Pienaar again won the gold medal at the African Championships in Brazzaville, in the Republic of the Congo, with a distance of 78.31. Pienaar made the final round of the 28th Olympic games in Athens and ended in 7th place with a distance of 79.95. His personal best for the season was 82.34. which he threw at Warsaw, Poland.
2001 Pienaar recorded a record-breaking result in the year of 80.77 at Potchefstroom and was also the World Student Games Finalist.

Pienaar began his javelin throw when he was 15, and only began seriously at the age of 16. He quickly became the top one athlete at his school and then was named the South African province of Mpumalanga. He was the winner of every important athletics competition and was named the Junior South African Champion at age 16, just one year after picking his javelin the very first time. In the following season, Pienaar got selected as a representative for South Africa at the IAAF World Junior Championship in Annecy, France. He took home the silver medal, with an average length that was 71.16 meters. In the month of October that same year, he won the Junior World Champion at the ISF junior World Championships held in Shanghai with a winning time of 79.46. Following returning after Shanghai, Pienaar threw an unofficial distance of 81.94 in the regional high school track and fields competition. The distance was greater than the junior world record. However, because of the staff at the event and the measuring equipment not being calibrated officially and Pienaar’s junior world record was not considered officially recognized as a result of the IAAF.
Pienaar attended Kanonkop High School in Middelburg, South Africa and was invited to join the prestigious training program in Potchefstroom University under the watchful supervision by coach Tersis Liebenburg in the year 2000. In his time at Potchefstroom and won an award of gold in the IAAF Coca-Cola World Junior Championships which took place in Santiago, Chile with a distance of 78.11.
2002 Pienaar became the South African champion and won the gold medal at the African Championships in Rades, Tunisia with a distance of 78.63. He also came in 5th place at the IAAF World Cup in Athletics held in Madrid, Spain. His season best was 81.40 in Boechout, Belgium.
