On the 20th of November, Struber was appointed as manager of EFL Championship side Barnsley, signing a two-year contract. He succeeds Daniel Stendel.

In June 2017, he took over as the coach at FC Liefering alongside Janusz Gora. Struber was also the coach for the Red Bull Salzburg team in the 2017-18 UEFA Youth League, where the reigning champions were eliminated in round 16. In the 2018-19 season, he assumed all responsibility for Liefering however he resigned in January to concentrate on obtaining an UEFA Pro Licence.

As a midfielder Struber was a midfielder for the majority of his time at SV Austria Salzburg from 1995 until 2001. He was the winner of his first Austrian Bundesliga in the 1996-97 season in Salzburg as well as the Austrian Super Cup. After his retirement as a player from 2008 Struber was a player at various clubs that were not as well-known.
