Additionally, his contributions to Tinnitus research research have contributed to the field of research in a large way. Andersson was appointed Professor at 37 years old and has been extremely productive, resulting in more than 600 research studies. He is well-known for his numerous collaborations with clinicians and researchers and has maintained a clinically active throughout his entire career. Gerhard Andersson has been nominated for the Swedish Psychologist Award both in the year 2009 and 2011 and was awarded the prize in 2014 . He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award 2017 from the International Society for Research on Internet Interventions. Professor Andersson is currently the main supervisor for 10 PhD students, and is co-supervising 15 students pursuing PhDs. So far the 20 ex- PhD students who Professor Andersson was the primary supervisor have been given the title of PhD. Five of Professor Andersson’s former PhD students have become full professors, and three of those in clinical psychology: Professor Per Carlbring Stockholm University, Professor Viktor Kaldo (Linneuniversitetet), and Professor Hugo Hesser (Orebro University). Additionally Professor Andersson was a faculty rival for a number of PhD candidates as well as an external reviewer for many PhD theses not only in Sweden as well as overseas. In 2014, Andersson received with the Nordic Prize in Medicine, and the prize for outstanding psychologists. In 2017, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Research on Internet Interventions.

As a clinical psychologist working in the field of behavioral medicine for 20 years, Andersson has devoted much of his research to the study of how behavioral, cognitive, biological, and social variables influence health and illness. His research in this area covers a broad range of conditions, including chronic pain, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, dizziness, hearing loss, tinnitus, burn damages, and health anxiety. Andersson’s work focuses primarily on the development and evaluation of behavioral and cognitive therapies for medical conditions, but his research in health psychology also concerns the study of how cognitive, behavioral and genetic factors are involved in health and prevention of illness. A particular interest of his is cognitive aspects and to apply various theories and methods from cognitive psychology in the study of health problems. Among many recent activities, Andersson is currently involved in studies on the role of acceptance in chronic medical conditions, including the first clinical trials on acceptance oriented CBT for tinnitus.
