Gerd Wessig (born 16 July 1959 in Lubz, Mecklenburg- Vorpommern) was an East German high jumper who won the gold medal in the 1980 Summer Olympics, the first man ever to set a world record in the high jump at the Olympics.
Wessig stood 2.01 meters tall and, during his time in competition at the Olympics, weighed 88 kg (6 7″ 194 lbs). In the days before the 1980 Olympics In the 1980 Olympics, he was unexpectedly named East German champion, setting the new personal best of 2.30 meters. He then was selected as a member of in the East German Olympic team.
Since the end of his active athletics career, he has been running an enterprise in Lübstorf-Rugensee, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern which sells sport equipment, sport and leisure systems, as well as park and garden systems. He married the long jumper Christine Schima (best performance: 6.96 metres, 1984; seventh place at the 1982 European Championships).
In the 1988 Olympic Games held in Moscow the 21-year-old athlete was among the softer favorites, however the most heavy favourite was the reigning winner, Jacek Wszola the former president of Poland in 1976. In the early part of the 1980 season in the outdoor, Wszola created a World Record of 2.35 on the 25th of May, (in Eberstadt, Germany) This record was surpassed the following day by an 18-year-old West German Dietmar Mogenburg, during a contest held in Rehlingen, Germany. Due to the western countries boycott of this year’s Moscow Olympics, Mogenburg did not participate. Of the 16 finalist in the high jump for men (all being qualified by jumping a minimum of 2.21 on July 31st) 13 took advantage of Fosbury Flop as their Fosbury Flop style, and three used the traditional stride.

Wessig did not just beat Wszola for the gold in the finals of the 1st August The two broke the record of 1976 several occasions, making clearances as high as 2.27, 2.29, and 2.31. Wessig began the contest at 2.15 and was unbeatable until 2.29 at which point he required two attempts. It was the most important height. Of the seven competitors who reached (the newly-created Olympic Record of) 2.27 only four were able to reach 2.29. The four of them were the Polish champions versus the whole East German team of Wessig and the 18 year old sensation Jorg Freimuth, and 22-year old Henry Lauterbach, would now fight for medals. The other three competitors who had all achieved 2.29 in their first attempt and Wessig’s initial miss at that level brought him down to fourth in the medals. However, he jumped back to first position by himself after his first at clearing 2.31.
Wessig then jumped over his Pole with a speed of 2.33 to earn his gold-medal. Wessig cleared the second try, and the Pole barely scraping the bar away on the third (final) jump. Wessig continued to leap, by himself, and set a new world record for his leap of 2.36 meters. He broke the record in his second attempt with an incredible clearance. He was the first high jumper to have could improve upon his Mens High Jump world record at the Olympic Games. The previous record holder of the world record, Jacek Wszola from Poland was awarded Silver in. The performance of Wessig at Moscow was the culmination of his career. His world record would last for three years and the Olympic record would be broken during the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.
After the Olympic Games, Wessig tried his luck as a decathlete (best performance: 8015 points, 23 May 1983 in Neubrandenburg; the equivalent of 7974 points according to the scale introduced in 1985). He turned back to the high jump following frequent injuries. In 1985, he came in second at the World Cup. In 1986, he reached seventh place at the European Championships. He became East German champion again 1988 and 1989.
