Kazanowski was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Kazanowski was the British Columbia High School Basketball Association provincial tournament MVP in 1978 while an athlete at Nanaimo High School. He was a college basketball player at the University of Victoria Vikes. He was recognized as three times CIAU All- Canadian and two-time winner of the Premier’s Athletic Award and was part of the four successive CIAU champion Vikes teams, between 1980 and 1983. Kazanowski earned an economics degree and was selected in the 7th round of 1983’s NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz (his name was identified in the draft as Joe Kazanowski).
The forward who is 6 feet 9 inches tall, Kazanowski first played for the national team in the 1979 FIBA World Junior Championship. He was a part of three World University Games, 1981 1983, 1981, and 1985. He was a participant for three FIBA World Championships, 1982 1986, 1990, and. He also played in the first Dream Team at the 1992 FIBA Tournament of the Americas in which Canada was defeated by American Americans in round-robin match 61-101. Kazanowski participated at the two Olympic Games too, in 1984, where a depleted field due to boycotts was able to see Canada be just outside of the medals, finishing fourth in 1988, and again in 1984.
In 2008, Gerald was inducted into the Nanaimo Sports hall of fame.
