Geraint Meurig Vaughan-Watkins (born on February 5, 1951) is a Welsh musician, singer as well as a rock and roll pianist and accordionist. He has performed with a variety of notable artists such as Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Paul McCartney, Roy St. John, Shakin Stevens, and, most recently, Status Quo. He also has been pursuing a solo career and released a variety of album under his name including a brand new album called Rush of Blood released in September of 2019.
Billboard contributing editor Paul Sexton wrote that In a Bad Mood “displays Watkins’ love for vintage R&B but also has more surprising sorties into chanson and cajun.” Sexton listed it as the first album of 2008 in his year- end lists; Billboard deputy global editor Tom Ferguson listed the album as the second most popular.
In 2014 he played accordion on Status Quo’s Aquostic (Stripped Bare) album. This was also featured, on 22 October 2014, as a live concert from the Roundhouse on BBC Radio 2 and on BBC television via the red button. In September 2016 he performed, as part of the Aquostic line-up, at BBC Radio 2’s Live in Hyde Park from Hyde Park, London.
In 2019, it was announced that a new solo studio album, Rush of Blood, recorded in collaboration with Basement Jaxx’s Simon Ratcliffe as producer, was scheduled for release in September.
In addition to the earlier vinyl album with The Dominators, Watkins has released four albums as a solo artist Watkins Bold As Love (1997), In A Bad Mood (1998), Bold As Love (1997), Dial W For Watkins (2004) The In A Bad Mood (2008) and Moustique (2014). The AllMusic’s Stephen Thomas Erlewine said of Dial W For Watkins, “It’s slight on the surface – the love songs are sweet and short, there are lots of ragged edges and lots of jokes – but that’s its appeal: it’s warm, friendly, engaging music, perfect for a relaxing evening at home with old friends.” Kerry Doole of Exclaim! described it as “an unassuming but delightful effort.” Jason MacNeil of PopMatters suggested that Watkins’ ability to master many genres of music “is what makes this album so bloody special.”

In the 1970s, in the beginning of his time during the 1970s Portsmouth Art College, he returned to Cardiff and joined Red Beans And Rice and Juice on the Loose. The group, Red Beans And Rice Attracted attention and relocated to London to pursue their careers. After their disbandment, Watkins performed solo in pubs throughout London and also with various groups including Southside United (with which he recorded an album) as well as The Cable Layers, Klondike Pete and the Huskies the Southend’s group, Micky Jupp on the “Be Stiff Route 78 tour. He recorded an album called Geraint Watkins & the Dominators (1979) and was composed by Andy Fairweather Low. Sessions followed. Producer Stuart Colman recruited him for the hit songs of Shakin’ Stevens, also performing or recording together with Dr. Feelgood, Rory Gallagher, Andy Fairweather Low, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Blues Band, Box of Frogs, Stray Cats, Carl Perkins, Crazy Cavan and the Rhythm Rockers and Eric Clapton as well as Eric Clapton. He was part of the famous Willie & the Poor Boys along with Bill Wyman and other Rolling Stones performing lead vocals on two tracks.
Between sessions, the 80s and beyond saw Watkins playing piano and accordion along with The Balham Alligators, a group, of which Watkins was one of the founding members and has been instrumental in helping keep the sound from Louisiana living in the London’s bars. Through the 1980s, he was a key member of Dave Edmunds’s band, performing and recording with Dave Edmunds. Between 1984 and 1989, Watkins played accordion and piano on five records by the Dutch group Normaal. He also contributed vocals, piano and accordion on Klondike Pete and the Huskies their 1981 album “Some of the Fellers” and is featured, with the name Lightning Wanson G, on the album “Who Axed You”. In recent years, Watkins has had time to join the band of Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings; contributing to Nick Lowe albums, The Impossible Bird (1994), Dig My Mood (1998), The Convincer (2001), Untouched Takeaway (2004) and At My Age (2007) as well as to Van Morrison album, Back on Top (1999), Down the Road (2002), Pay the Devil (2006) and Keep It Simple (2008).
In 2009 and 2011, Watkins toured with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings as keyboard and accordion player and singer. He toured with Peter Green & Friends as a keyboard player in 2010. Watkins also toured with, and opened for, Nick Lowe, as a keyboardist.
