Ger McDonnell Biography

Ger McDonnell is one of the most popular and richest Mountaineer who was born on January 20, 1971 in Kilcornan, County Limerick, Ireland. Gerard McDonnell (20 January 1971 the 2nd of August, 2008) Engineer and mountaineer was the very first Irishman to climb the summit of K2 the second highest mountain on Earth in August 2008. McDonnell lost his life as did 10 other mountaineers due to an avalanche as they walked down which resulted in the most deadly accident to occur in the history of K2 mountaineering.

The year 2012 was the time Damien O’Brien (married to McDonnell’s sister Denise) was the author of an autobiography of McDonnell, “The Time Has Come: Ger McDonnell – His Life & Death on K2” which was released through The Collins Press. The book was officially launched in McDonnell’s hometown , Kilcornan, County Limerick, on the 30th of March, with the majority of the people in the town attending. Mike Barry, the first Irish person to hike up to the South Pole, officially launched the book. Others present were Clare O’Leary, Wilco van Rooijen, Cas van de Gevel and Maarten van Eck.

It was reported by remaining members of McDonnell’s group that he was not willing to climb to help injured others. The leader of the expedition Wilco van the Rooijen family, a 40-year-old Dutch climber transported to a hospital for military personnel located in Pakistan in the aftermath of the incident and said that the poor preparation were the cause of the accident. He suggested that climbers in advance placed ropes in inappropriate locations in the mountains, which impeded the progress of many teams of mountaineers, and ultimately causing the death of three climbers who were part of his team. “Everything was going well to camp four, and on summit attempt, everything went wrong,” said van Rooijen, who was in his hospital room within his hospital bed in the Northern Pakistani town of Skardu. “The biggest mistake we made was that we tried to make agreements. Everybody had his own responsibility and then some people did not do what they promised. With such stupid things, lives are endangered.” He also singled out a team for not bringing the full distance of rope it was expected to. Ger McDonnell’s phone on satellite was handed over to Pemba at the summit, and he carried it together with his camera to the base camp. McDonnell’s family members, including brother JJ and his sister Denise went to Islamabad to find answers. While McDonnell’s body wasn’t found, a funeral occurred in Kilcornan on August 17th, 2008.
