Georgios Papagiannis (Greek: Giorgos Papagiannes; born on July 3 1997) is a Greek professional basketball player with Panathinaikos in Panathinaikos of the Greek Basket League along with the EuroLeague. He was born in Marousi, Athens, Greece and is a 7 feet 3/4 inch (2.20 meters) tall center with 7 feet 6 inches (2.29 2 meters) wingspan. His nicknames include “Big Papa” and “Big George”. Additionally, he is a part of Greece’s senior National Team of Greece. He was drafted as the 13th player overall during 2016’s NBA Draft from Phoenix Suns. On the 25th of June in 2014, the player signed with Panathinaikos for a multi- year contract but there was a player option included in the contractthat allowed him to depart Panathinaikos to join an US college in the summer of 2015. Papagiannis was regarded as one of the most promising young European talent prospects, has received offers of scholarships from 17 USA schools which included UConn, Arizona, Temple, NC State, Oregon, St. John’s, and Kentucky. In July of 2015 it was revealed that Papagiannis decided to keep his playing career with Panathinaikos. His Panathinaikos contract contained the option of buying out his contract for EUR500,000.

Papagiannis was a member of the Panathinaikos teams that won both the 2015 edition and the 2016 edition of the Greek Cup. He also played in six games with Panathinaikos during the 2015–16 EuroLeague season competition, where he averaged 1.5 points and 1.7 rebounds per game, in 5 minutes per game. In the 2015–16 Greek League season, he averaged 6.5 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, in 11.5 minutes per game, in 23 games played.

In April 2016, Papagiannis entered the 2016 NBA draft, and was projected as a mid-to-late second round pick, but he also garnered interest as a late first round pick. However, on June 23, Papagiannis was selected with the 13th overall pick by the Phoenix Suns, becoming the highest drafted Greek player ever. His rights were later traded to the Sacramento Kings on draft night, and in July, he joined the Kings for the 2016 NBA Summer League. On July 15, 2016, he signed his rookie scale contract with the Kings. On November 5, 2016, he made his NBA debut in a 117–91 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, recording two points and one rebound in six minutes off the bench. On March 18, 2017, he had his first double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the Kings’ 110–94 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. During his rookie season, he had multiple assignments with the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League. On February 8, 2018, Papagiannis was waived by the Sacramento Kings.

Papagiannis was born in Marousi which is a suburb in the north located in Athens, Greece, and lived his childhood in Megara located in the west region of Athens. Papagiannis was a participant in the Jordan Brand Classic International Game in 2013. Papagiannis announced that he would be going to Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in May 2013. The school he attended playing basketball and school at Westtown in the 2013-14 academic year and the basketball season as junior in high school. Following his junior year in secondary schooling at the United States, he transferred to the American School in Athens, Greece to complete his senior year in high school.

As part of the Greek under-16 national team Papagiannis was a part of the 2012 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship, where he was the leader with blocks for each game. He also represented Greece in the 2012 TBF Under-16 World Cup in Sakarya, Turkey, where he was instrumental in helping Greece take home their gold trophy. He also took part in the 2013 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship, which he won the bronze medal.
