At the age of 6, Fab began taking piano lessons. It was not until age 14 when he started playing the guitar when he began to perform in his group “The Canadian Museum” at local high schools as well as YMCA dances. He played for a few years in a variety of bands before becoming an original part of “Buxton Kastle”, his first major band. The group was signed by RCA Records in 1970 with the bandmates Jerry Doucette, Jack Pedler as well as David Kastle, the group had a huge success with the song “Kagie”, hitting #2 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart RPM in 1971.
In his current work as a record producer He has collaborated alongside Darcy Hepner ( of the group: Blood, Sweat and Tears) as well as the King Biscuit Boy CD, “Biscuits ‘n’ Gravy” and”Puss n’ Boots”, the Poison Arrows song “Puss n’ Boots” and in collaboration with Sylvain Sylvain who is from The New York Dolls. In addition to over 20 other albums, he most recently co-wrote and recorded “Canadian Heroes” in dedication to families of the fallen soldiers who were killed in Canadian soldiers. After Doucette quit the group around 1971. Georgie moved to a Hammond CV Organ to guitar. The band later changed the labels of RCA and then Reprise Records, and then Warner Bros where they again made it to the charts with their hit singles “Red Red The Rocking Horse”, “Shorty McKenna”, “Lovin Games”, and “Love is Life”. This was the time that Georgie was put in the spotlight performing on Canadian TV shows like “Canadian Bandstand”, “Musical Friends” and “Like Young”, a national musical TV show based out of Montreal.
After the split the band Buxton Kastle Georgie was introduced to Skip Prokop, a founding part of the Juno award-winning rock group Lighthouse. In addition to being a contributor to The Lighthouse project, Georgie as well as Skip co- wrote the top hit song “It Just Occurred To Me” for A&M Records artist Peter Pringle. The track remained at the top of the charts throughout the period between 2nd and 9th May 1981. It also earned the two brothers an BMI award for being among the most played albums that year. It also was awarded the Gold Record for Pringle. The result was Georgie getting a call from Atlantic Records Chairman of the Board who wanted to work along with Juno Award winner, Kim Mitchell to compose music for his debut album, Akimbo Alogo. The album was certified platinum, and the team’s efforts led to an album that included the Top 40 hit, “Feel It Burn” and the “Go For Soda” B-side named “Caroline” with Pye Dubois and the top-rated track, “All We Are.” Georgie was the one who wrote the uncredited lyrics hook: “…you are making me feel like I’m a long distance away …”
Fab was born in St. Josephs Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario, to mother Nora Elizabeth (née Thorne) of Sydney, Nova Scotia, and father Kenneth Robert Johnston of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He is the brother of the now deceased sister Beverly Ann. Robert was educated at St. Bridget’s and St. Margret Mary’s Elementary Schools, and Barton and Hillpark Secondary Schools (where he met his wife, Irene Brown), Hamilton, Ontario. Robert completed his education at Mohawk College.
