During high school, he performed in the DC area dance troop The T-N-T Poppers with classmates Kevin Hammond and Angela Williams-Coles.
After attending Howard University for a short time, G-Wiz moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. He was also songwriting on the side. In 1987 he was able to get his song “She’s Fly” onto Tony Terry’s debut album Forever Yours. The song went to number ten on the Billboard U.S. R&B Singles chart and to number 80 on the U. S. Billboard Hot 100.
