George James Terwilliger III (born on June 5 1950) is a famous American politician and lawyer. It is the partner at McGuireWoods’ Washington, D.C. office of McGuireWoods LLP where he is the head of the firm’s crisis Response practice as well as co-head of the firm’s White Collar team. He was a past United States Deputy Attorney General and the acting United States Attorney General. Terwilliger was born in Vermont was appointed in February, 1992 by president George H.W. Bush to be the Deputy Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice. The position was taken over by William Pelham Barr. As Deputy Attorney General, Terwilliger became the second-highest-ranking official in the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and ran the day-to- day operations of the Department, serving in that position from 1991 through 1993. The position was given to him by post through the President George H.W. Bush after having served in the position of United States Attorney for the District of Vermont, appointed by the President Reagan.
Following his admission to the bar, between 1978 until 1981, Terwilliger worked as the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia (1978-81) and as Associate U.S. Attorney for the District of Vermont (1981-86) before becoming U.S. Attorney for Vermont (1986-1990) and then as Deputy U.S. Attorney General (1991-93) during the George H. W. Bush administration. Terwilliger was a specialist in white collar criminals and terrorists. He was a terrorism expert in 1993. Terwilliger “briefly took the helm of the Justice Department as acting attorney general after the departure of former Attorney General William P. Barr.”
Terwilliger commented on the Iran–Contra affair in a February 6, 2001 appearance on a CNN titled “Burden of Proof: Ronald Reagan’s Legal Legacy”.
