The boy was born on the 20th of November 1950 Khartoum where his father worked as a physician. They moved back to England in the year 1955, and settled in the tiny Suffolk city of Eye. After graduating from high school with no qualification, Somers spent several years working as an Outward Bound instructor in the English Lake District and in schools across Africa, Borneo, and North America. Then he was selected to be an expedition guide and mountaineer in the British Antarctic Survey. He covered 4,500 miles using a dog sleds or snowmobiles, mostly during winter by sledding amongst the mountains and the frozen ocean in the fjords as well as in the vicinity of accessible islands.

In 1993, with a friend Craig Hetherington and little knowledge of travel in the desert, Somers set off to traverse over 1,400 miles in Western Australia from Perth to Uluru which is located at the center of the continent. To transport their luggage, They trained 3 camels who were rescued by the wild.
