In 1993, with a friend Craig Hetherington and little knowledge of travel in the desert, Somers set off to traverse over 1,400 miles in Western Australia from Perth to Uluru which is located at the center of the continent. To transport their luggage, They trained 3 camels who were rescued by the wild. The journey of 97 days was through Carnegie as well as in the Central Aboriginal Reserves. As part of the preparation for the expedition, from April-June 1998, Somers together with Antarctic crossing companions, as well as trio of dog team members, achieved an unprecedented feat of 1,400 miles across The Greenland Ice Cap from the most southern portion towards the Humboldt glacier in the North. The group then made it through Seal Nunataks near the north part in the Antarctic Peninsula to reach the Russian station of Mirny on March 3 in 1990, despite the issues with resupply when they reached through the South Pole. It was also the only time that a person crossed Antarctica by foot, on its most axis, and also with dogs. The “impossible trip,” according to some commentators who had referred to it, was described as a major success due to its accomplishment and the contribution it made to cooperation between nations, as well as the message it sent to protect the environmental environment.
