Geert Bourgeois is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on July 6, 1951 in Roeselare, Belgium. Geert Bourgeois’s father Emiel Bourgeois was born in Hulste on the 10th of October 1918, near the close of First World War. He later worked as a teacher in the primary schools. Following his time in the Second World War he was accused of co- operation and spent several months in prison. After his rehabilitation, he was appointed headmaster of his primary school, where he previously taught. He passed away in 1998. Emiel Bourgeois got married to Izegem’s Gaby Vens (1920-2015) and together they had two sons and two daughters. Geert Bourgeois was a student in Saint Joseph’s College in Izegem before going on to study laws in Ghent University from 1970 to 1975. In the in the same year, he also got married Betty Hoste with whom he established an law firm. The couple has two sons. Bourgeois was politically active from a young age. In his years in high school, he joined part of the Catholic Student Action (Katholieke Studentenactie – KSA). In 1966, he established alongside his brother Kris and classmate Koen Baert as a Blue Banner group of Father Boucquillon. After the group was merged with VNJ (Flemish Nationalist Youth League) and he resigned from the chapter in his hometown. Later, he joined The Flemish Nationalist Student Union (Vlaams-Nationale Studentenunie) as well as The Language Action Committee (Taal Aktie Komitee). At 17 years old, He was elected director of his local Volksunie branch as well as the chairperson of the Volksunie Youth Wing of Izegem. [7]

In a referendum on the general membership that took place in 2001, it was the Bourgeois group, which received less than half of the votes cast won against two other groups who participated which were led by Bert Anciaux and Johan Sauwens respectively. Because at most 50% of votes needed to be gathered for the right to remain with the Volksunie brand, Bourgeois and his supporters created a new political party in November 2001called it was the New Flemish Alliance (Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie N-VA). From 2001 to 2004 Bourgeois was the initial party president of the N-VA which was in a fierce protest against government “purple” coalition government. In his book De puinhoop van Paars- groen (The Shambles of Purple-Green), the author slammed the Belgian government that was in office from 1999 until 2002. On May 23, 2003 Bourgeois returned to federal Chamber of Representatives as the sole N-VA candidate. He kept his seat until 2004. The third round of direct Flemish elections that took place on the 13th of June 2004 Bourgeois was elected to the electoral district in West Flanders. He remained a member of the Flemish Parliament for more than a month before joining with the Government of Flanders on 22 July

In the Flemish elections of 7 June 2009, Geert Bourgeois was again directly elected in the electoral constituency of West Flanders. One month later, on 13 July 2009, Bourgeois was appointed Vice-Minister–President and Minister in the Peeters II Government. He was in charge of Public Governance, Local and Provincial Government, Civic Integration, Tourism and the Vlaamse Rand. By decision of the Government of Flanders of 24 July 2009, he was also assigned the competence ‘Immovable Heritage’. He passed on his tenure as a Member of the Flemish Parliament to Wilfried Vandaele.

In June 2010, he ran in the federal elections as the leading candidate for the province of West Flanders. He was elected as a Member of Parliament. However, in order to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament, he had to temporarily step down as a Flemish Minister. This occurred on 5 July 2010. Two days later, he was re-appointed Minister and resigned from the Chamber of Representatives. In the wake of the Flemish elections of 25 May 2014, he was sworn in as a Member of the Flemish Parliament at the inaugural meeting of the Flemish Parliament on 17 June 2014. On 25 July 2014, he was sworn in as the Minister-President of the Government of Flanders. His seat as a Member of the Flemish Parliament was taken by his successor Bert Maertens. On 2 December 2015, a formal tribute was paid to Geert Bourgeois in the Flemish Parliament’s plenary assembly for having served 20 years as a Member of Parliament/Minister. In 2019, he will be running for the European elections. The Flemish elections are to be held on the same date, with Bart De Wever running for the office of Minister- President.[11]

From 1977, Geert Bourgeois ran in every national election. He was elected to as a member of the National Board of the Volksunie party in 1990 until 1993 was head of the Association of Flemish (political) Office Holders. Then, in 1996, he was a part of the Volksunie party’s the leadership. At the election of 1995 the party was elected a federal parliament. As a member of the national Chamber of Representatives, he was mainly concerned with legal issues as well as matters pertaining to Belgium’s diverse Communities. While he was an opposition member and was able to pass several bills from private members of his approval, like the Protection of Sources Act, which means that journalists are now required to disclose the source of their information in the situation of an emergency. The public praised him for his work as an official participant in the Dutroux Committee and the role that he played as a participant in Octopus negotiations. He was elected in 1999. Bourgeois was elected leader of the Volksunie party in the Chamber of Representatives.

Geert Albert Bourgeois (Dutch pronunciation: [‘ge’rd bu’r’Zwa born on July 6, 1951) is a Belgian politician from the N-VA. From July 2014 until July 2019 he served as President of Flanders. He was previously an attorney for the Kortrijk bar, and was also serving as an elected Member of the Belgian federal parliament for the Volksunie (1995-2001) and also for in the N-VA (2001-2004).

Bourgeois was a participant in Municipal Council elections in the year the year 1976. He was elected as a councillor with 997 votes preferential. Because he was still required to meet the national service requirements and obligations, he could not be elected until 1977. He was elected in 1982. won a second term in the same year, with the Volksunie becoming a member of in the council of city officials. Bourgeois was elected as Alderman to Public Works, Town and Country Planning, Town Centre Regeneration, Trade, Small Business Owners & Industry and Legal Affairs. He has repeatedly been elected from the time he was elected. Following the elections of 1988 the Alderman was elected again of the municipal council, the position was served until the year 1994. In 1994, elections brought the coalition of a different majority into the powerhouse in Izegem. He continued to serve as on the Izegem municipal council until the year 2018 and did not run in the municipal elections in the same year. Between 2013 and 2018 he was the chairperson of from 2013 until 2018, he was the chair of the Izegem municipality council.

He was succeeded as N-VA party chairman by Bart De Wever when he took up office in July 2004 as Flemish Minister for Public Governance, Foreign Policy, Media and Tourism in the Leterme I Government. On 22 September 2008, he tendered his resignation as a serving Minister in the Government of Flanders, in the wake of which the cartel with the CD&V – of which Bourgeois has been one of the architects – was ended.[9] Bourgeois subsequently resumed his seat as Member of the Flemish Parliament until June 2009. From the very outset, he went into opposition mode against the government he had just left. This was contrary to the tradition that former Ministers should remain absent for a while after they have stood down.[10]
