O’Reilly was born as the oldest of triplets and the fourth of six siblings in the year 1966, at Dublin, Ireland and brought up in London and later in Fox Chapel, Pittsburgh, USA (1971 from 1971 to 1980) during the time the dad (Sir) Tony O’Reilly was the CEO and Chairman of H.J. Heinz Inc,, and later in Dublin. He went to Harrow School in London in 1981, and completed his high school education with Clongowes Wood, Ireland’s oldest Catholic school run by the Jesuits and located in a historical home near one of the principal residences of the family, Castlemartin in Kildare, Ireland (which was acquired by billionaire John Malone of Liberty Media in December 2014).

O’Reilly was previously married to the actress and model Alison Doody on 25 June 1994 at the family home, Castlemartin. The couple then settled in Bartra House, a 10,000 square foot (930 meters) Dalkey, the marriage gave birth to two daughters. The couple divorced in 2006.

Following his father’s retirement in 2009, O’Reilly was promoted to Group CEO of INM. In April 2012, he stepped down as chief executive of Independent News & Media, ending 39 years of direct control by his family of Ireland’s largest media group.

In Seoul, South Korean in 2005, he was elected President of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN). O’Reilly orchestrated the merger of WAN with IFRA in 2009 to form the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers – the representation body for the global newspaper and news industry. He was elected as the first President of the merged association and held the office until 30 June 2011. As the longest-serving President he now serves as an Honorary Member of the Executive Committee.

The year 1993 was the time that O’Reilly became a part of the Londonand Dublin-listed multinational media group, Independent News and Media plc (INM) in 1993, which was being the biggest media company in Ireland and was the head of it’s “yellow page” division, the Independent Directory. In 1999, following his work in various different divisions, he became made as the CEO for the Irish activities of INM and was responsible for the relocation of the company’s logistic and production activities into Citywest Business Park in 2000. He was appointed Group COO of INM in December 2001 , and was appointed to the directorship in the year 2004. He was Chairman of the ASX-listed APN News & Media, one of the top entertainment and media business with assets spread across Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, from 2008 until 2012, a business that INM owned a majority stake. In 2005, he was the leader of INM’s move to India by investing in Jagran Prakashan Limited (JPL) one of India’s most renowned media conglomerates that is owned by the Gupta family. O’Reilly was as a member of the board of JPL between 2006 and 2014.

Gavin Karl O’Reilly (born 17 December 1966) is a Dublin-born businessman , who has Irish as well as Australian citizenship. He is the fourth and second child of the former Irish Media magnate as well as renowned industrialist Sir Anthony O’Reilly (Sir Tony O’Reilly) and Australian Susan (nee Cameron) O’Reilly.

After passing his Irish Leaving Certificate exam in 1985, and completing his degree in 1985, he began working for London the advertising company Doyle Dane Bernbach (now part of DDB Worldwide), for two years. He later went to Georgetown University School of Business located in Washington DC, but interrupted his studies to become an stockbroker at First Pacific Securities in Hong Kong and London and London, before completing his education at Georgetown with distinction.

He is the former CEO of The Agency Group Limited, and prior to that he was group CEO of London Stock Exchange-listed Independent News and Media PLC, the then largest press group in Ireland and South Africa and one of the largest media groups (in press, radio and outdoor advertising) in Australia and New Zealand (through its then investment in APN News & Media) and leading media investments in India and Indonesia, with almost 200 titles and a readership of over 100 million. He is also the former president of the World Association of Newspapers (2005–2011), and a director of the Ireland Funds.
