In July 1988, he made his debut with the Copenhagen-based Kjobenhavns Boldklub in Denmark, shifting towards SK Austria Klagenfurt in Austria in 1989. He concluded his career with Walsall, Kilmarnock, Shrewsbury Town and Hong Hong Kong-based Ernest Borel FC.

His exciting Villa career came to an end following injuries to his knee in the game against Nottingham Forest in September 1983. After a brutal tackle that he had to be helped back to the ground through Ian Bowyer and, in Shaw’s words his knee “clicked”. Following his recovery the player continued to play at Villa until the end in the season 1987-1988.

In in the 80s, Shaw’s goals saw Aston Villa win the First Division championship in 1980-81 , and winning the European Cup the following year and was one of only two Birmingham born players on the team. He was a winner in 1981 when he was named the PFA Young Player of the Year and was also awarded the Bravo Award the following year and was named the top under 23 player in European competitions.

Shaw earned seven caps with the England under-21 squad. After a highly excellent European Cup campaign with Aston Villa and Aston Villa, he was part of the 40-strong preliminary England team for the 1982 FIFA World Cup finals; However, he wasn’t selected for the 22-man final squad.
