After an 11-year stint as an amateur, Nicklaus returned to pro ranks in the PGA Tour Champions tournament on PGA Tour Champions in January 2019, just 10 days after the 50th anniversary of his birthday. Nicklaus is known best because he is the son of the golf legend Jack Nicklaus.
Nicklaus was slow to start his debut year on the PGA Tour in 2000 but in April he put up three solid performances during the BellSouth Classic in Atlanta, Georgia and was in contention for the lead of 54 holes alongside Phil Mickelson. The torrential downpours hit the course on Sunday, making a large portion of the course impassable, Tour officials canceled the final round and demanded an instant-death tournament to determine the winner. The first hole, a par-3, Mickelson hit the green and Nicklaus missed his putt just short of a bunker. He needed Nicklaus two additional shots to make it to the green, and Mickelson made birdie on the hole to take the title. In spite of his disappointment, Nicklaus was encouraged, declaring “It just lets me know that there are good things coming down the road.”
Forced to return to the qualifying tournament, Nicklaus again earned his card for 2002. But that season saw him make just six cuts in 26 events and it would be his final season on the PGA Tour. After spending 2003 primarily on the Tour’s minor-league circuit (now the Korn Ferry Tour), Nicklaus stopped playing professional golf to focus on the family business.
In 2007, Nicklaus was reinstated as an amateur by the United States Golf Association.
However, the remainder of 2000 didn’t bring any kind of results for Nicklaus and he never finished more than 25th in any subsequent event. But the cash he made from finishing second in Atlanta was enough to allow him finish at 119th place on the PGA Tour money list , and the PGA Tour card remained with him. PGA Tour card.

Nicklaus came back to Ohio State to finish his college career in the year
- after which he was awarded the famous Porter Cup and qualified again for the U.S. Amateur. The following year, he’d turn professional.
In the following 8 years Nicklaus was able to make many unsuccessful attempts to be a part of an appearance on PGA Tour. He participated at the 26 PGA Tour events during that period which included his 1997 U.S. Open, but made just two cuts. Nicklaus played the majority of his time on the international circuit, which included his participation on the European Tour in 1998, as well as on mini-tours. In 1999 Nicklaus was able to pass his first PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament on his eighth attempt. The following week, Nicklaus teamed with his father to take home the Father/Son Challenge, a 36-hole tournament that was played in scramble style.
In 2001, Nicklaus made just 12 cuts in 34 starts, with a best finish of 15th at The Memorial Tournament, an event founded by his father. He also qualified for the U.S. Open, his second appearance in a major tournament, but missed the cut. He placed 184th on the Tour money list and lost his playing privileges.
