Gary Paul Haney FRIBA, FAIA (born on 16 April 1955) is an American architect and design partner of the firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Haney’s design approach is heavily influenced by the techniques of environmental modeling, in-depth material research, as well as advanced design information for buildings (BIM) technology. The buildings on which he was chief designer include the tall Al Hamra Tower in Kuwait City and civic structures in the United States including two Public Safety Answering Centers in New York City and the United States Census Bureau headquarters as well as the redesign of the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of American History, both located within Washington, D.C.
Haney was the architect of the $85 million overhaul of the National Museum of American History that is which is part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The museum is extremely popular that had nearly three million people visiting in was shut down the following year to allow for renovations. The work enhanced light with the creation of an atrium that was five stories tall and organized the 300,000 sq ft of exhibit area around the first Star- Spangled Banner. The museum was reopened in the month of November. The remodel was awarded it an Award of Merit at the 2013 AIA Washington D.C. Design Awards.
The new U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland, officially opened in 2007, was designed to accommodate a workforce that fluctuates because of the periodic nature of the census, had to be constructed around operational structures, and was limited to eight stories by site regulations. Essentially two buildings hewn from a central mass, it is 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) long. The design uses laminated wood on the facade, seeking to make those inside feel as if they are in a woodland. The building won a Green Good Design award from the Chicago Athenaeum in 2009 and an Award of Excellence in Architecture from the Washington chapter of the AIA in 2012.
Al Hamra Tower in Kuwait City, completed in 2011, is an example of Haney and his team’s use of building information modeling (BIM) technologies. With 77 floors and 412 meters (1,351 ft) tall, it is the tallest building in Kuwait. The building won a Merit Award from the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 2013.
Haney was the lead architect along alongside David Childs on the United States Embassy in Ottawa, Ontario, dedicated by President Clinton in the month of October in 1999. The design needed to be completely altered following the Oklahoma City bombing required a safer building. The building’s glass facade was eliminated, and the walls are thicker than four feet. According to a critic of architecture, Benjamin Forgey, Childs and Haney created their construction “like a bunker, without making it look like one”.

Born to Middletown, Ohio, Haney graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Environmental Design in architecture from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and then studied with Richard McCommons, helping him to design and construct private homes. He was then one of the initial employees of the company that was just formed Alesia & Crewell before studying for the Master of Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in which he worked in studios alongside Michael McKinnell and Gerhard Kallmann and graduated in 1981.
