Garth Ray Iorg (/”‘ o:r dZ/ORJ born on October 12, 1954) is an American former professional player of the game who played for the entire duration of his career (1978 and 1980 to 1987) in the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was also one of the initial coaches for Milwaukee Brewers.
After his playing career Garth began his coaching career. He was a manager every minor league within the Toronto Blue Jays system. He was also a part of his own Sosnick Cobb Sports Agency and was the agent for a number of players in the young age group. Iorg was employed to Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee Brewers as a roving instructor. He also served as the third base coach during twelve games of the 2008 season following the time that Dale Sveum became the interim manager. He was with the team through the season of 2014 which was the time he was dismissed on October 10. He is currently the Manager for the Texas AirHogs baseball team from Grand Prairie, Texas.
Garth Iorg is the brother of Dane Iorg, another former Major League Baseball player. They played against one another at the time of the 1985 American League Championship Series. Garth was selected to the Jays during the 1978 season and played in 19 games, mostly in the second position. He played for nine seasons with the Jays and hit .258/.282/.347 having hit 20 home runs over ninety-one games. He was a utility player , who played the majority of his time as the right-handed member of the third-base platoon Rance Mulliniks known as “Mullinorg”. While playing in the major leagues it was also his turn to play 2B 1B, SS, the DH position and in the OF. While the catcher was an emergency but he did not play this position at the professional level. After his retirement from shortstop, he played for the Bradenton Explorers in the Senior Professional Baseball Association. Iorg was well-known due to his peculiar batting stance which was performed on the toes his front foot, facing the catcher when pitching was taking place. Most often a singles hitter Iorg was the player with the highest average of batting (.313) and an .469 Slugging percentage for the Blue Jays in their division-winning 1985 season. In his final plate appearance in the major leagues, Iorg made Toronto’s last during the 1988 season, when the team would have been a tie for with the Blue Jays with the Detroit Tigers for the American League East title. The Jays suffered a collapse in the last month of the campaign, going down their final seven games. In the year of the end of his career, Iorg had been the Blue Jays’ top player in pinch-hits.
After having attended College of the Redwoods in Eureka, California, Iorg was selected into the eighth round (181st in the overall draft) at the time of 1973’s Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Yankees. He was chosen from the Toronto Blue Jays from the Yankees organization during the year 1976’s Major League Baseball expansion draft. It was his MLB debut in April 9th, 1978.In his debut season in 1978, he was wearing the number 29 uniform. He was playing in the minor leagues by 1979 and then in 1980, he returned by Blue Jays. Blue Jays wearing uniform number 16 until he retired.
